He found his inspiration in the Basilica di San Clemente, a structure whispering tales of ancient times. The King’s vision began to take shape in 1845, with Ludwig Persius, his trusted court architect, translating his dreams into reality. Sadly, Persius passed away before its completion, leaving Friedrich August Stüler to fulfill the King’s grand design. On September 24th, 1848, the Friedenskirche opened its doors, a harmonious blend of Prussian ambition and Italianate charm. But the Friedenskirche is more than just a beautiful facade. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a masterpiece of Byzantine art – a shimmering apse mosaic. This 13th-century treasure, originally from the church of San Cipriano in Venice, found a new home thanks to the King’s keen eye and even keener purse. He purchased the mosaic in 1834 when its former home faced demolition. Now, it adorns the apse of the Friedenskirche, depicting Christ enthroned in glory, flanked by Mary, John the Baptist, and other significant figures. The church’s beauty doesn’t end there. Look for the altar canopy, its four dark green columns crafted from Siberian jasper, a gift from Tsar Nicholas I of Russia.
