Amidst the bustling energy of Berlin, stands the Friedensburg Oberschule. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a melting pot of cultures, a testament to resilience, and a beacon of bilingual education. Friedensburg Oberschule first opened its doors in 1975 as a Gesamtschule. It catered to students from grades 7 to 10, boasting ten tracks and a student body of up to 1200 pupils. The school’s initial focus was on diverse subjects, differentiated instruction based on ability, and the integration of a broad social and cultural mix of students. Practical and hands-on learning was central to their philosophy. In the face of a local educational landscape dominated by Gymnasien, Friedensburg Oberschule faced the challenge of attracting a student body that would ensure the necessary diversity in learning opportunities, talents, and teaching staff. Recognizing the need to adapt, the school sought approval for a Gymnasiale Oberstufe, which was granted in 1994. Four years later, the first graduating class of 25 students took their Abitur exams. Today, approximately 130 students graduate from Friedensburg Oberschule each year. Reflecting its commitment to cultural exchange, Friedensburg Oberschule successfully applied to become a “Staatliche Europa-Schule Berlin” (SESB) in 2003-2004. This bilingual German-Spanish program has enriched the school with new languages, nationalities, and cultural influences. The SESB now comprises nearly half of the student population. It has become the largest SESB Oberschule in Berlin. This program has further diversified the school’s language profile, where Russian had played a significant role for decades. In grades 7 to 10, the school now has four SESB classes and four regular classes per year. The 2010 school structure reform in Berlin prompted a significant transformation. Friedensburg Oberschule embraced the reform and redesigned two core aspects. The external performance differentiation was replaced with a graded system of internal differentiation, incorporating elements oriented towards graduation requirements. Secondly, vocational orientation was shaped into a school-specific concept that has garnered nationwide interest. Friedensburg Oberschule’s commitment to educational excellence has not gone unnoticed. The school was nominated for the German School Prize in both 2015 and 2020. Today, Friedensburg Oberschule continues to thrive as a place where diversity is celebrated, bilingualism is fostered, and students are prepared for a future in a globalized world.
