Nestled in the Serra da Meia Via, Fridão whispers tales of poets, power, and Portuguese tradition. Fridão isn’t just a village. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history and nature. The village sits between the converging rivers of Tâmega and Olo, about 8 km from Amarante and 60 km from Porto. Imagine standing here in the early 20th century, when the dream of Dr. António do Lago Cerqueira began to illuminate the region. In 1912, he envisioned a hydroelectric power plant on the Olo River. His dream became a reality. By 1917, Amarante, thanks to Fridão, became one of the first places in the area to embrace electric light. Fridão also claims two notable sons. The poet Nunes Ferreira, who beautifully captured the essence of the Tâmega River in his verses, was born here. It is also believed to be the birthplace of António Cândido da Costa, a renowned orator and parliamentarian. As you explore Fridão, notice the unique architecture. Admire the Casa das Chousas, the Casa de S. Faustino (now a charming rural tourism spot), and the elegant Casa da Ponte, Casa da Costa, and Casa da Zindinha da Parachã. The traditional brown schist houses of Meia Via, topped with their half-barrel Portuguese tiles, add to the village’s distinct character. But Fridão is more than just buildings. It’s a place where tradition thrives. The art of weaving is deeply ingrained in the community. The women of Fridão skillfully create intricate works of art with their nimble fingers, their looms singing stories of creativity and heart. These woven masterpieces carry the name of Fridão far and wide, a testament to the village’s enduring spirit. Fridão is a village that remembers its past and embraces its future. It’s a place where the whispers of history mingle with the hum of modern life.
