A hidden sanctuary awaits. Welcome to Fresh Creek Nature Preserve. This 42-acre salt marsh is a secret world nestled in the heart of Brooklyn. It’s a place where the wild things still roam.
Fresh Creek Nature Preserve is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to Brooklyn’s past. Centuries ago this area was a network of freshwater streams. One such stream was Fresh Creek separating Starrett City and Canarsie. This creek once marked the border between the towns of Flatlands and New Lots. In the late 19th century plans existed to straighten and dredge Fresh Creek for a seaport. Fortunately this never happened. Instead Fresh Creek retained its winding course. The project was eventually built at Newark Bay.
Imagine a time before the towering apartment buildings. Before the Belt Parkway sliced through the landscape. In the 17th century a tidal gristmill stood near the creek’s head. Cornelius Janszen Van Der Veer and his son-in-law built this mill. Known as the Red Mill it was part of a vast estate. The only remnant today is the nearby Charles Vanderveer House. The estate stretched to Brooklyn College. Can you imagine the mill’s quiet hum the creek’s gentle flow?
The 1930s saw attempts to fill in Fresh Creek north of Flatlands Avenue. This was meant to unify eastern Brooklyn. The creek was partially filled in until 1952. Then the Breukelen Houses and Ballfields were built. Today the land around the creek is still partially constructed. Much of the park is designed to manage stormwater runoff. It was officially designated a nature preserve in 1996.
Fresh Creek Nature Preserve is not entirely accessible. However the eastern shore offers a sanctuary. Here you can spot some of the 325 bird species that visit Jamaica Bay annually. Faber’s foxtail and velvetleaf flourish in this tranquil haven. You’ll walk along paths that pass a salt marsh. This is a rare glimpse of untamed Brooklyn. A mile-long trail along Louisiana Avenue provides stunning views. There’s even a small sandy beach to enjoy. You might even see some of the resident fish.
