A peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. That is the Frere Temple. It sits in the tranquil greenery of Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, formerly known as Victoria Gardens. The Frere Temple is a beautiful monument dedicated to Lady Frere, the wife of Sir Bartle Frere, the Governor of Bombay. This charming shrine was erected in 1862, the same year the Victoria Gardens were opened. The temple was built to commemorate the opening of the gardens, which were considered a remarkable achievement of the time. The Frere Temple is designed in the style of circular Greek temples, with six Corinthian columns and crafted from Porebunder stone. It stands 35 feet tall and is crowned with a canopy that held a bust of Lady Frere. The temple is a testament to the legacy of the British Raj in Mumbai and their contribution to city architecture. The temple’s design, a blend of classical and Victorian elements, is a reminder of their architectural influence and a tribute to Lady Frere’s presence. The Frere Temple is a landmark in the vibrant tapestry of Mumbai’s history and a place where beauty and history intertwine.
