What secrets lie buried beneath Frenne? Legends whisper of a giant named Fregne, whose bones rest beneath the very ground we stand on. Frenne, once known as “Fregnegård,” echoes with this ancient tale, a story etched in the landscape of Bornholm. This place isn’t just a collection of stones. It’s a portal to the past. Frenne has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, a silent observer of human history on this island. Hammers’s map, dating back to the mid-1700s, pinpoints Frenne as “Frende Gaard,” part of Kongens Mark, a royal expanse stretching along the coastline. Another theory suggests the name “Frenne” comes from the old Norse word for fern, “Frägen.” These plants thrived here, blanketing the area. Even today, you can find pockets of ferns nestled amongst the trees, their delicate fronds unfurling in the dappled sunlight. The Lang family, prominent figures in medieval Bornholm, held Frenne within their vast estate. Their influence radiated outwards from their seat of power at Maglegård in Østermarie. However, Frenne’s destiny shifted in 1578, becoming state property through an exchange with King Frederik II by Peder Oxe’s widow. Its tenure as royal land was brief. In 1630, Frenne was granted to the Herredskaptajnen, the local captain, for his lifetime. Life at Frenne has always been intertwined with the sea. The coastline bears the marks of this relationship, etched into the deep inlets like Hullehavn and Frenne Havn. The rocky outcrops and small islands, like Kirreskær, stand sentinel against the waves. Kirreskær, named after the tern, or “Kjirra” in the local tongue, hints at a time when these elegant birds flocked to the island just south of Frenne Havn. Frenne Red, further out to sea, marks a treacherous area of submerged rocks, a hidden danger for unsuspecting sailors. This area offered cover for invaders landing on Bornholm’s shores. In the 19th century, a formidable battery was constructed here to defend the flat coastal landscape. Frenne Mark has been a cradle of human habitation since people first arrived on Bornholm. The ease of access by sea, through inlets like Frenne Havn, made this area a natural hub. The faint outlines of fishmonger stalls, huddled near the coastal path, whisper of a time when fishing was the lifeblood of this community. The path we walk on now, part of an ancient rescue path, is paved with Aarsdale gravel, a coarse granite that has weathered the passage of time. The same gravel adorns park paths and churchyards across Bornholm, a tangible link to the island’s rich past.
