“Ready to serve” echoed through the newly built Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schmökwitz fire station. This modern structure, completed in 2024, stands in stark contrast to its predecessor, a quaint 1901 building nestled beside the old tram depot ruins. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schmökwitz has a rich history, dating back to its founding on October 21, 1892. Today, this vital community resource houses a dedicated team of nine active members, one woman and eight men, ready to respond to any emergency. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schmökwitz, identified by its watch number 5450, operates as a Type A fire station, meaning it handles emergencies within its designated area independently, even without the direct support of the professional fire department. They are equipped with a modern LHF 16/12 City fire engine and a first responder vehicle. Their training takes place every first and third Tuesday of the month, from 7 pm to 10 pm. Beyond the active members, the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schmökwitz boasts a respected honorary department of eight members. They also nurture the next generation of firefighters with a vibrant youth fire brigade, composed of two girls and eight boys. Children are welcome to join from the age of ten. The move to the new station on Godbersenstrasse, though bittersweet, marks a significant step forward. The old station, while charming, couldn’t accommodate the needs of a modern fire service. The construction of the new Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schmökwitz, however, involved a careful balancing act between public safety and environmental concerns. It necessitated the conversion of approximately 2723 square meters of forest land, a decision made after thorough environmental impact assessments and considerations of public interest. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schmökwitz continues its long-standing tradition of service, now equipped with modern facilities and a renewed commitment to protecting the community. They handle an average of 110 calls per year. Their dedication ensures the safety and well-being of Schmökwitz residents, carrying the torch of service ignited over a century ago.
