Nestled in the eastern part of Essen, Freisenbruch whispers tales of a rich and layered past. Freisenbruch first appears in the annals of history in 1047. It was mentioned as a farming community. The ancient Hellweg trade route passed directly through it. Freisenbruch, along with its neighbor Eiberg, belonged to the Amt Königssteele district. All three communities were incorporated into Königssteele in 1919. Later, in 1926, Königssteele merged with the city of Steele. Just a few years later, in 1929, Freisenbruch became part of Essen. Freisenbruch is more than just rows of houses and bustling streets. This district boasts a unique blend of urban and rural landscapes. The Bergmannsfeld housing development, built in 1966, stands as a testament to a time of post-war housing shortages and anticipated growth. Around 5,000 people call this sprawling complex home. Did you know it even won an award from the Deubau building exhibition? Just west of Bergmannsfeld, the verdant Bergmannsbusch park offers a welcome respite. This park has a story of its own. A farmer named Bergmann, whose family history in the area dates back to at least 1412, forested the land. His family name graces both the park and the housing development. Freisenbruch has been touched by the clang of industry as well. Traces of coal mining linger. The Hünninghauser Erbstolln, active from 1725 to 1815, and the Zeche Hünninghauserbank, operational from 1728 to 1823, lie in Freisenbruch’s westernmost reaches, near the Essen-Steele Ost station. Freisenbruch is not just about history. It pulsates with modern life. It offers a range of amenities and attractions. From the large Schwimmzentrum Oststadt, a combined indoor and outdoor swimming pool complex, to the DRK senior center, Freisenbruch caters to its diverse community. The district also hosts a vibrant annual Karneval parade, preceded by the Gänsereiter-Verein’s traditional goose riding. Lastly, Freisenbruch has a peculiar claim to fame. Its local football club, TC Freisenbruch 02, may not be a football powerhouse, playing in the lower leagues. However, it has gained global attention for its innovative use of digital technology. Fans can actually participate in the club’s management decisions online. From choosing the starting lineup to deciding on contract extensions, TC Freisenbruch 02 has redefined fan engagement.
