Did you know this towering obelisk at Freedom Park marks more than just a spot on the map? It embodies Cebu’s journey through history. Freedom Park’s story is one of transformation. It echoes with voices of the past. It also anticipates the future.

Originally, this land belonged to friars. The Order of Augustinian Recollects owned it. In 1880, the city acquired it. Later, American troops occupied the park in 1899. They even built a military barrack. It was named after Maj. Oliver Warwick.

After World War II, Freedom Park became a political stage. Candidates held rallies here in the 1950s and 1960s. This is where the name “Freedom” originated. But during Martial Law in the ’70s, protests were banned. The park then transformed into a market. Flowers, baskets, and other products filled the space.

Recently, the Cebu City Government and Megawide Construction Corp. partnered to restore Freedom Park. The goal was to revive its original purpose. In October 2022, the park reopened. It featured a tall obelisk at its center. This obelisk is surrounded by Narra trees and benches. The restored Freedom Park once again became a space for the public.

During construction, workers unearthed historical artifacts. They found porcelain from China. Also discovered were animal bones and shells. These items dated back to the late 1500s. The finds suggest the area was once a coastal settlement. Cebuanos actively participated in maritime trading here.

Today, the Freedom Park Obelisk stands tall. It is a reminder of Cebu’s vibrant history. The park is open 24 hours a day. People come here to relax. They enjoy the greenery and fresh air. The nearby Warwick Barracks offer food and drinks. The Freedom Park Obelisk is more than just a monument. It represents the spirit of Cebu. It’s a place where history, culture, and community converge.
