Ever wondered about the spiritual heart of Tonga? Here, before us stands the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. It is more than just a church. It is a symbol of Tongan identity.

The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga is the largest Christian denomination in the nation. Many Tongans mistakenly think it is the state church. The Tongan Royal Family has deep roots within the church. Many members are prominent within the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga.

Its story began with missionaries. They came from the London Missionary Society. The Wesleyan Methodist Mission Society further shaped its Methodist identity. The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga can be considered a de facto state church because of these combined factors.

In 1924, Queen Sālote Tupou III united two churches. These were the Free Church and the Wesleyan Methodist Church. This union created the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. However some people rejected the union. They formed the Church of Free Tonga.

The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga has a twofold ministry. This includes the Presbyterate and the Stewardship or Diaconate. The Superintendency is not a separate order. It is an office within the Presbyterate.

Becoming a presbyter is a long process. It can take five to eight years. Candidates are not required to attend theological seminary immediately. This prevents shortages of educators in the Church’s schools. The Church elects stewards to assist parishes.

The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga lets local congregations decide who is worthy of holy orders. Individuals need the popular vote of their local church. Only then can their application be considered. The Board of Theological Studies can bypass this. They can recommend candidates directly.

Church ministers can serve until they are 70. They can retire as supernumerary officers. The President can recall them. This fills unexpected vacancies quickly.

The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga allows its clergy to marry. Married clergy are more effective. Their spouses often help. They might found women’s departments or establish schools.

The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga celebrates Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Presbyters usually perform baptisms. Stewards can perform them in emergencies. The Lord’s Supper is usually for presbyters.

The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga also runs schools. These schools make up 30% of the schools in Tonga. The schools use Fridays for cleanup instead of classes. School uniforms are royal blue and white.

The current President of the Free Wesleyan Church is Rev Dr Tevita Koloa’ia Havea. The Secretary-General is Rev Mr ‘Alifeleti ‘Atiola. The King also serves as the Royal Chaplain.
