Did you know that Frederiksø is the second largest inhabited island in the Ertholmene archipelago? It’s named after King Frederik IV. Imagine standing here on Frederiksø. This island is a crucial part of Denmark’s history. In the 17th century, King Christian V built a fort on Frederiksø. This was during conflicts between Denmark and Sweden. Denmark needed a naval base in the Baltic Sea. Frederiksø and Christiansø became strategic strongholds.

Frederiksø covers only four hectares. It is small but full of stories. The island helped protect Danish naval ships. They could stock up on water and repair damage here. The fortress on Frederiksø was expanded over time. It was an impressive site. Bastions and ring walls faced the open sea. These fortifications protected the island.

Take a walk around Frederiksø. It won’t take long. You will see Lilletårnet. This small round tower was built in 1685. It served as a fortress tower. It prevented sailing between Græsholmen and Frederiksø. Today, Lilletårnet is a museum. It holds artifacts and stories of the islands.

Frederiksø once housed a state prison. J.J. Dampe was imprisoned here in the early 19th century. He was a Danish theologian and political activist. The external appearance of Frederiksø hasn’t changed much. Thick granite walls still surround the island. Old cannons point toward the sea.

Today, about 80 people live permanently on Frederiksø and Christiansø. Many historical buildings are now homes. The islands have a school, church and even a post office. They also have their own fire-fighting services. Fishing and tourism are important for the economy.

The Ertholmene archipelago attracts many visitors. Around 80000 tourists come each year. They come mostly on day trips from Bornholm. Visitors explore the history and enjoy the sea views. They also savor fresh seafood.

Across the water is Græsholmen. It is a bird reserve. Many migratory birds stop here. Frederiksø and the other islands play a vital role. They contribute to the preservation of unique ecosystems. Remember the strategic importance of Frederiksø. It was once a vital naval base. Now, it is a peaceful island with a rich history.
