In the heart of East Boston, a bronze and granite sentinel stands watch. This is the Frederick J. Carey Monument. It’s a tribute to a young man lost in the throes of World War I. Frederick J. Carey, a wagoner in the 26th Division’s 101st Infantry Regiment, met his fate on September 19, 1918. He died from wounds received in battle. The Frederick J. Carey Monument was dedicated in 1922. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime. Carey, originally from East Boston, rests in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France. The Frederick J. Carey Monument, located at the intersection of Paris Street and Bennington Street, isn’t just a memorial. It’s a tangible piece of history, connecting us to the personal stories behind the larger narrative of war. It’s a place to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of individuals like Frederick J.
