A grand spray shower. That’s what first catches your eye at Frederick Cabbell Park.

Frederick Cabbell Park isn’t just a park. It’s a whimsical journey. It began as Cambria Playground in 1951. The land was once farmland owned by families like the Bucks and Fausners. Developer Oliver B LaFreniere had a vision. He hoped a pretty name would attract buyers. It worked.

After World War II many African-Americans settled in Cambria Heights. Famous jazz musicians Chick Corea and Paul Gonzalez even lived nearby. In 1989 the playground was renamed. It honored Detective Frederick Cabbell. He served the community for over twenty-five years. He led the Cambria Heights Little League and Boy Scout Troop #176. Seven council members supported the name change. Mayor Edward I Koch signed the bill.

Then came 1998. A million dollars from Council Member Juanita E Watkins and six hundred thousand from Borough President Shulman transformed the park. The new design is like a fairytale. Think medieval Europe. Five three-foot-tall blue spheres greet you. Six gargoyle statues watch you from the grand spray shower. They’re playful and fun. Ornamental gates and arched fencing create a magical Gothic atmosphere. There’s even a weathervane and a directional rosette. Swings for toddlers and older children create a space for fun. The colours resemble stained glass. Wire mesh figures of ball players adorn the baseball area. New seating and trees add to the enchanting atmosphere.

Frederick Cabbell Park is more than just swings and slides. It’s a story of community pride. It’s a testament to the legacy of a dedicated police officer. It’s a reminder of a transformation. A park that reflects its past while embracing the joy of play. Enjoy your time in this unique and wonderful place.
