What secrets does this ancient stone tower hold? Right before you stands the Frauentorturm a powerful medieval landmark in Nuremberg. This isn’t just any tower. It’s one of four major towers integral to Nuremberg’s Old Town fortifications. Its strategic position guarded the Frauentor or Women’s Gate a crucial entry point from the Regensburg road.

The Frauentorturm’s name hints at its location near the Klarakloster the Poor Clare Convent. This connection speaks volumes about the area’s past blending defense with local culture. Records from 1386 show payments to a gatekeeper suggesting the tower was already operational then. It was part of an earlier city wall system before a major rebuild.

The Frauentorturm wasn’t always round. In 1498 the inner Frauentor was demolished. The Mauthalle the city’s customs house was built then. In 1558 a significant remodeling transformed the tower. It acquired its present rounded form including the addition of a side gate.

The completion of the Königstor in 1849 changed the Frauentor’s role. It became primarily for outgoing traffic. Today it’s pedestrian-only. The former armory houses the Nuremberg Crafts Yard a vibrant cultural and commercial hub.
