Before us stands the Franz-von-Sales-Kirche a remarkable structure in Dusseldorf’s Oberbilk district. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to history architectural innovation and a surprising connection to a historic mill.

The Franz-von-Sales-Kirche wasn’t always here. Before its construction from 1969 to 1971 the site housed the Scheidlingsmuehle a mill first mentioned in 1435. This mill burned down in 1893 leaving only its foundations. An inn replaced it but eventually the land was sold to the St Maria Rosenkranz parish. They needed a new church to serve the growing community in this area of Dusseldorf.

Designed by architect Hans Schwippert the Franz-von-Sales-Kirche is unique. Its striking circular design is made of red brick. The interior is truly special. It resembles an ancient theater or a lecture hall. The altar sits at the lowest point. Semi-circular benches rise in tiers creating an unusual seating arrangement. Schwippert envisioned the design as a flatfish with the altar as the head and entrances as fins.

A fascinating detail is the tabernacle. Its foundation includes a 1.4 meter diameter millstone. This millstone was found during construction commemorating the Scheidlingsmuehle. The church’s acoustics are exceptional. The uneven inner walls naturally amplify sound. This makes it perfect for concerts and performances.

The church’s patron saint Franz von Sales is a fitting choice. His association with education aligns with the nearby schools. The church even has an organ built in 1958 by Paul Ott.

The Franz-von-Sales-Kirche hosts regular services including those of the Polish Catholic mission. Special masses with contemporary sacred music are also celebrated. In 2006 there were discussions about selling the building due to maintenance costs. However the church has since increased in importance so no sale is currently planned.

The Franz-von-Sales-Kirche is more than a place of worship. It’s a living piece of Dusseldorf’s history and a beautiful example of modern architecture. A blend of past and present it stands as a reminder of Dusseldorf’s rich heritage and its forward-looking spirit. It’s a church with a story a truly unique place of worship.
