Did the scent of freshly brewed beer ever lead you to a place of rebellion? Right here, at Frannz Club, the aroma of hops once mingled with the spirit of subversive youth. Frannz Club wasn’t always a haven for cutting-edge music and vibrant nightlife. It started life as part of the Schultheiss Brewery, once the largest brewery in the world. Imagine arriving in the 19th century by horse-drawn carriage, the city skyline visible in the distance. This area, known as Windmühlenberg due to its numerous windmills, was a popular escape for Berliners. The Schultheiss Brewery, with its sprawling beer garden under shady linden trees, became a local favorite. The brewery’s tower, a prominent landmark, was affectionately nicknamed the “Bierkirche” by locals. Frannz Club occupies the former brewery’s restaurant building, designed by the renowned architect Franz Schwechten, who also designed the Anhalter Bahnhof and the Gedächtniskirche. The brewery thrived, becoming a global leader in lager beer in the 1920s. However, its fortunes changed with the rise of the Nazis. The brewery became a “National Socialist model enterprise,” and forced laborers toiled in its cellars during WWII. After the war, the brewery struggled to maintain its equipment. It brewed its last beer in 1967, marking the end of an era. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1970, the building was reborn as the Jugendklub “Franz,” named after the famous DEFA actor Erich Franz. The Frannz Club became a sanctuary for East Berlin’s music scene. Every night, bands played, fostering a sense of community and subtle resistance against the regime. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Frannz Club faced financial difficulties and closed in 1997. But the spirit of Frannz Club couldn’t be contained. It reopened in 2004, embracing its history while forging a new identity. Today, Frannz Club is a vibrant cultural hub, hosting concerts, parties, and dance events. The beer garden, a reminder of its brewing past, offers a place to relax and enjoy a drink under the summer sky. Frannz Club stands as a testament to Berlin’s resilience, a place where history and contemporary culture intertwine.
