Can you imagine a statue that embodies wisdom and invention? That’s the Franklin Monument right here in Lafayette Square. It stands as a tribute to Benjamin Franklin. But why is there a statue of Franklin in New Orleans? He had no direct connection to the city.

Let’s step back in time. The first Franklin statue stood in the center of this square in 1873. It was moved in 1900. Weather caused deterioration. So, the statue was removed altogether in 1909. It was relocated to the public library and later to Benjamin Franklin High School.

Now, gaze upon the current statue. It’s a replica of one in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. Henry Wadsworth Gustine of Chicago gifted it to New Orleans. He spent winters here and always visited the original Franklin statue. He was saddened by its removal. Gustine funded a new one. The statue was unveiled on Gustine’s 89th birthday in 1926. Sadly, he passed away the following year.

Take note of the pedestal. The New Orleans Typothetae, or printers’ association, donated it. It honors Franklin’s impact on the printing trade. Two quotes from Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanack are inscribed. “Save while you are young, to spend when you are old.” Another one reads “One penny saved is better than two pennies earned.”

The Franklin Monument is more than just a statue. It symbolizes Franklin’s values and contributions. He was a printer, inventor, and statesman. He embodies the spirit of innovation and civic duty.

Look closely at the statue’s details. Hiram Powers created it. Powers also created a statue of Thomas Jefferson. Both statues were commissioned for the U.S. Capitol.

Notice the tree trunk that Franklin leans on. See the channel scored into it? This represents Franklin’s invention. He invented the lightning rod. This invention protected buildings from lightning strikes.

The statue shows Franklin in a thoughtful pose. His hand rests on his chin. He wears a period costume from the 1750s to 1765. Powers even obtained Franklin’s clothing from his descendants. This was done to ensure accuracy.

The Franklin Monument connects New Orleans to a founding father. It reminds us of his enduring legacy. As you leave Lafayette Square today, remember Franklin’s words of wisdom. Let his spirit of innovation inspire you.
