Wow What a colossal building Franklin K Lane High School truly is. It’s hard to believe this imposing structure was once one of the largest high schools globally. Imagine the hustle and bustle of thousands of students filling these halls.
Franklin K Lane High School opened its doors in 1923. It wasn’t always located here though. The school moved into its current building in 1937. This impressive building is named after Franklin Knight Lane a prominent figure in US history. He served as the Secretary of the Interior under President Woodrow Wilson. His legacy lives on not only in the name of this school but also through his work in establishing the National Park Service.
Did you know that this impressive structure was a Works Progress Administration WPA project? It was built during the Franklin D Roosevelt administration. The building itself is a testament to that era’s ambition and vision. Walking its perimeter is roughly a quarter of a mile. Four laps equal a full mile.
Franklin K Lane High School wasn’t without its challenges. During the 1960s and 1970s the school faced significant difficulties. Amazingly after significant reform the school flourished becoming known as the miracle on Jamaica Avenue.
The school’s success was recognized nationally. In 1978 the US Congress cited Franklin K Lane High School in the Safe School Study. The school’s turnaround story was featured in various case studies. Despite the positive changes the school eventually faced closure in 2012 due to consistent poor performance. The building however remains a significant landmark.
