High above the Nidda River sits Frankfurter Berg. A unique Frankfurt district. It wasn’t always a district though.

Frankfurter Berg’s story begins not as a distinct place. Instead parts belonged to Bonames Eschersheim and Berkersheim. Imagine these areas as puzzle pieces. Before 1996 they were separate. Then they were united. The Frankfurter Berg was officially born. It became Frankfurt’s newest official district.

The area’s history is fascinating. It began as a worker’s colony. Think simple houses close-knit neighborhoods. Built around 1937. This was under the Reichsheimstättengesetz. Then came the post-war Bizonale Siedlung. Built because Frankfurt was a contender for the new capital. These houses were initially made of wood. Later ones were stone. More houses followed. Multi-story apartment buildings. The area grew.

A significant part of Frankfurter Berg’s story involves the American military bases. Edwards and Drake Kasernes. They were here. Then they closed. The housing areas opened. Some houses became homes for federal employees. Others went to the open market. Still others for social housing. Former officers’ housing was sold. The change had a big impact. This led to changing the social fabric of the area.

On the former Edwards-Kaserne land new buildings arose. Apartment buildings townhouses and more. The Drake Kaserne is now used by the German Federal Police. Civilian use continues. It’s an ongoing process. It continues to shape Frankfurter Berg’s identity. The population has increased. The district has evolved.

Today Frankfurter Berg is known for its diverse housing. It’s also known for its efficient public transportation. Bus lines 27 63 and 66 connect it to other districts. The S-Bahn S6 line provides a direct link to the city center. The U5 line is planned. It will improve access.

Frankfurter Berg is a blend of old and new. It is a testament to urban development. It is a testament to adaptation. Its past shapes its present. Its evolution is ongoing. It is a fascinating district. This district is one of Frankfurt’s gems.
