In 1175, a small band of settlers from the Rhineland, the Franks, arrived in this valley. They were seeking new opportunities, fertile land, and the freedom to build their own community. They found all three here, beside the flowing Zschopau River. They named their settlement Frankenberg, “Mountain of the Franks,” a name that echoes through time to this very day. Frankenberg/Sachsen has witnessed centuries of history unfold. From its humble beginnings as a small farming village, it grew into a bustling town known for its textile industry and later, its automotive prowess. The river Zschopau, a vital artery of trade and commerce, played a pivotal role in Frankenberg’s development. Frankenberg prospered under the Wettin dynasty, a powerful family that shaped the destiny of Saxony. In the 16th century, the Reformation swept through Saxony, and Frankenberg embraced the new Protestant faith. In 1539, the town officially adopted Lutheranism, a decision that would have a profound impact on its cultural and religious landscape. The Thirty Years’ War, a devastating conflict that engulfed Europe, left its mark on Frankenberg. The town endured hardship and uncertainty, but its resilient spirit persevered. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Frankenberg’s textile industry flourished. The clatter of looms and the whirring of spinning wheels filled the air, transforming the town into a center of textile production. The river Zschopau provided the necessary power for the mills, and Frankenberg became known for its high-quality textiles. Frankenberg/Sachsen also played a role in the early days of automotive history. The Framo, short for Frankenberger Motorenwerke, produced innovative vehicles here in the early 20th century. These vehicles, known for their sturdy construction and reliability, became a symbol of Frankenberg’s ingenuity. The legacy of Framo can still be felt in Frankenberg today. Then, in the 20th century, the town faced the tumultuous period of World War II and its aftermath. Frankenberg/Sachsen endured its share of challenges during these difficult years, but it emerged with renewed determination to rebuild and prosper. Today, Frankenberg stands as a testament to its rich and complex past. As you stand here, in the heart of Frankenberg/Sachsen, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet.
