Established in 1988, the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal embarked on their mission in the vibrant heart of New York City. Their story began as a parallel community to the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. These sisters, embracing the Capuchin Franciscan tradition, sought to live the Gospel with simplicity and devotion. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal found their first home in a former Polish parish in the South Bronx. They shared this space with the friars, working side-by-side in the community. Their early work included assisting in soup kitchens and hospitals. They also joined the friars in their evangelization efforts. Their distinct gray habits, black veils, and sandals became a familiar sight in the city’s most challenging neighborhoods. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal faced a unique challenge. They had to balance a deep prayer life with their active work helping the poor. Their days included Mass, Holy Hours, Rosaries, and the Divine Office. Despite the hardships they encountered, their habit became a symbol of safety and a beacon of hope. Even those unfamiliar with the faith recognized them as helpers. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal survive solely on donations. This allows them to live a communal life centered around charity, prayer, and poverty. Their mission is to live the Gospel values in simplicity. They follow the ideals of St. Francis, as passed down through the Capuchin tradition. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal have expanded their reach beyond New York City. They’ve established convents in Leeds, England; Drogheda, Ireland; and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Their work extends from running a soup kitchen within their convent to providing food at their doorstep. They also travel regularly for evangelization work. Mother Lucille Cutrone, the superior of the community, has witnessed remarkable transformations. She’s seen people return to the sacraments and find peace through the Eucharist. The sisters’ dedication has even inspired their neighbors, who follow their example in acts of service and community improvement. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal have touched countless lives, demonstrating their unwavering faith and commitment to those in need.
