Gazing at the gentle flow of the Foxdale River, have you ever wondered about the stories it could tell? The Foxdale River, a Manx waterway, begins its journey east of South Barrule. It meanders northward for 5 kilometers, eventually merging with the River Neb at St. John’s. This seemingly tranquil river holds a significant place in the history of the Isle of Man, particularly in the village that shares its name, Foxdale. Once a hub of mining activity, the Foxdale mines, with their rich yields of zinc blende, lead ore and silver, left their mark on the river. Sadly, this legacy includes a dark chapter. Pollution from the mines, particularly the Foxdale lead-mines, once devastated the river’s ecosystem. Nothing could survive in its waters from Foxdale all the way to Peel Harbour. This grim reality limited fishing to the Rhenass branch of the River Neb, a cleaner tributary that joins the Foxdale stream near St. John’s. Thankfully, those days are in the past. While the scars of industry remain, the river is recovering its vitality. Imagine the anglers of the past, casting their lines into the Rhenass, seeking brown trout, sea trout, and even salmon. Picture the bustle of activity around the now-silent mines, the clang of machinery echoing through the valley. The Foxdale River witnessed it all. As you stand here today, appreciating the river’s renewed beauty, remember the resilience of nature and the echoes of a vibrant past that still linger in the waters of the Foxdale River.
