What secrets does Foxdale hold? Foxdale is a small village nestled in the heart of the Isle of Man. It takes its name from the Norse “Forsdal,” meaning “waterfall dale.” Foxdale was once a bustling hub of mining activity. During the 19th century, 13 mines operated in the area, five of which worked the rich Foxdale shear. These mines produced zinc blende, lead ore, and silver. The Isle of Man Mining Company eventually took ownership and operated the mines until their closure in 1911. The mines played a significant role in the island’s economy, at one point making the Isle of Man one of Britain’s leading lead-producing areas. The legacy of this mining past is preserved in the Foxdale Heritage Centre. Located in the old railway station, the center showcases the history of the village and its mining industry. Speaking of the railway, Foxdale once had its own station on the Isle of Man Railway. It primarily served the mines and is no longer operational. Dominating Foxdale’s skyline is the Victoria Clock Tower. A gift from the Isle of Man Mining Company, this 40-foot tower stands as a testament to the village’s mining heritage. It was designed by John Nicholls, a Foxdale mine engineer. The tower’s dedication ceremony in 1901 was a grand event, filled with civic pride. Even today, the tower is visible from across the valley.
