“This bridge…” So begins the inscription on the Fourbeck Bridge Monument. It stands as a testament to a merchant’s generosity. Today we explore the story behind this monument.

The Fourbeck Bridge Monument is located near the intersection of Anna Salai and Jones Road. It sits on the State Highways Department’s workshop premises. This fenced enclosure is opposite the Nandanam Veterinary polyclinic. The Tamil Nadu Department of Archaeology has cared for this monument since 2003.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Chennai’s landscape long ago. A large water body called Long Tank stretched along Mount Road. It ran from Nungambakkam High Road to Saidapet. The surplus water flowed through a brook. A small temporary bridge stood over this canal. It was known as Mambalam Odaipalam.

In 1786 a permanent bridge replaced the temporary one. This was thanks to Adrian Fourbeck. He was a successful Madras merchant. He left instructions in his will for its construction. Thomas Pelling, John de Fries, and Peter Bodkin carried out his wishes. They were Fourbeck’s executors. Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Ross oversaw the construction. He was the Chief Engineer of Madras.

Who was Adrian Fourbeck? He started as a member of the Gunroom Crew in Fort St George. In 1740, he received a disability pension. He then partnered with Samuel Troutback. Together they thrived in business. Fourbeck passed away in 1783. His legacy lived on through this bridge.

The Fourbeck Bridge Monument has a four-sided pedestal. Each side bears the same message in a different language. You will find it in English, Latin, Persian, and Tamil. The English inscription reads that the bridge was erected as a public benefit. It commemorates Adrian Fourbeck’s munificent liberality.

The monument we see today is a protected site. The Tamil Nadu State Archaeology Department maintains it. It reminds us of the Long Tank. It also reminds us of the bridge that once stood here. The bridge helped prevent flooding in the area.

The Fourbeck Bridge no longer exists. Yet, this monument keeps its memory alive. It reminds us of Adrian Fourbeck’s generosity. It also reminds us of the city’s history. It is a story of philanthropy and public service. So take a moment to appreciate this monument. It represents a bridge to the past. It connects us to the legacy of Adrian Fourbeck.
