Here stands NEAN’s “Four” mural. This artwork graces the wall at Ulmenweg 27 in Mannheim. It’s a part of the STADT.WAND.KUNST project.

The Belgian artist Fabien Hupin, known as NEAN, created this mural in spring 2024. He spent two weeks working on “Four” in Neckarstadt-Ost. Rain interrupted him but did not discourage him. The theme of “Four” is tranquility. A large peaceful forest covers the GBG house wall. A figure stands on a tree trunk within the forest. The figure observes the landscape without showing their face. An orange jacket stands out against the muted colors.

NEAN retained the wall’s original color for the mural’s base. He also drew inspiration from the immediate surroundings. The artist said that the trees and quiet residential area inspired him. He wanted to preserve this energy and add more nature. Remaining in that mood was important to him.

The interplay of humans and nature is a recurring theme in NEAN’s works. He focuses on capturing the magic of moments spent in nature. NEAN believes nature calms people. Locals showed their appreciation while he worked. They called out “Very nice”. NEAN feels everyone has an intuitive connection to nature. This includes those unfamiliar with art history. He is self-taught. NEAN uses only wall paint, rollers, and brushes for his murals. He stopped using spray cans years ago due to sustainability concerns.

The idea for “Four” came from German pianist Nils Frahm’s music. Frahm’s piece “Four” sparked vivid images in NEAN’s mind. This music gave the Mannheim mural its name. He captured these images in his initial sketch. Then he immortalized them on the 168 m2 facade.
