“Endowment” is the word. The Vakıf Museum or Foundation Works Museum of Ankara is dedicated to ethnographic endowments. Here we stand before a building filled with treasures. These items showcase Turkey’s rich cultural heritage.

The Foundation Works Museum of Ankara first opened its doors on May 7 2007. But the building itself has a longer history. It was constructed in 1927. The building reflects the First National Architectural Movement. Notice the simple facades. They lack traditional ornamentation.

Initially, the building served as the School of Law from 1928 to 1941. Later, it became a girls’ vocational school. It even functioned as a dormitory. Before becoming a museum, it was the Ankara Mufti’s office until 2004. The Vakıflar General Directorate then acquired the building. They restored it specifically to house the Ankara Vakıf Eserleri Müzesi.

Inside the Foundation Works Museum of Ankara, you will find items from all over Turkey. For years, these treasures were stored in the depots of the Vakıflar General Directorate. The collection includes rugs and carpets. Look for the tools used in carpet weaving on the ground floor.

Upstairs, admire the hand-written books and tiles. Metal and wooden items are also on display. You will also see more recent items such as clocks and cameras. These date back to the 19th century.

Among the highlights are the wooden window panels. They are from the 13th-century Ahi Evran Mosque. Also, the wooden panels once adorned the Divriği Great Mosque. Some items on display were once stolen. They were smuggled abroad. However, they were later recovered and returned to Turkey. Now, they are proudly exhibited here at the Foundation Works Museum of Ankara.

Take your time to appreciate the craftsmanship. Imagine the hands that created these beautiful objects. Each piece tells a story. It speaks of tradition, skill, and dedication. The Ankara Vakıf Eserleri Müzesi preserves these stories. It shares them with us. The Foundation Works Museum of Ankara connects us to Turkey’s past. It enriches our understanding of its cultural heritage.

As you leave the Foundation Works Museum of Ankara, consider the meaning of “vakıf”. These charitable foundations have supported Turkish society for centuries. This museum is a testament to their enduring legacy. It is a place where history and art come together. It is a place where the past is cherished for the benefit of the future.
