In 1824, a vast expanse of Texas land was granted to John and Randolph Foster. This land, known as Foster, would become a crucial part of the ever-expanding Houston metropolitan area. Foster wasn’t just a name on a map; it was a community built on the sweat and toil of a plantation, growing sugarcane and rice before the Civil War. Foster’s official recognition arrived with its own post office in 1882. By 1884, Foster was a bustling village of 60 residents, complete with a steam gristmill, a cotton gin, a physician, and the luxury of semi-weekly mail. Progress continued its march. By 1892, three gristmills operated in Foster, and daily mail delivery connected the town to the wider world. A general store and a flour mill followed just a few years later, solidifying Foster’s place in the Texan landscape. Foster gained further recognition in 1914 for its pecan production, a testament to the fertile land. However, times changed. The population dwindled to 40 by 1925, and by 1931, only a single business remained, a stark contrast to its earlier prosperity. Despite these changes, Foster persevered. In 1936, a blacktop road connected the community, a sign of modernization creeping in. Even with the closure of the post office sometime in the 1940s, Foster remained a community. Tragedy struck Foster on November 21, 1992. A powerful F2 tornado ripped through the area, a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable force. Today, the Old Foster Community Museum stands as a testament to the community’s enduring spirit. It preserves the stories and memories of Foster, ensuring that its unique history remains alive for generations to come.
