“Who remembers the ubiquitous ‘Made in Romania’ electronics?” I ask, gesturing towards the area of the Fosta Platformă IPRS Băneasa. This expansive 15.5-hectare site once pulsed with the energy of thousands of workers, the heart of Romania’s electronics industry. IPRS Băneasa, short for Întreprinderea de Piese Radio și Semiconductori, was founded in 1962. It quickly transformed from a modest space within the Electronica factory on Baicului Street to this sprawling industrial complex. Six production halls rose on this land, each designed for potential independence, a testament to the ambition of the times. IPRS Băneasa was a key player in the global technological race of the Cold War. While rumors circulated of stolen technology, the truth is more nuanced. IPRS legally acquired licenses and technologies from Western giants like Thomson CSF, ITT Intermetall, AEG, Solitron Devices Inc., Plessey, and even Sprague Electric. This allowed them to produce components not just for Romanian consumption, but for export to markets including the USA, Canada, Australia, and China. The company churned out everything from transistors and diodes to integrated circuits, even electronic sirens for cars. Imagine lines of workers meticulously assembling components, the hum of machinery filling the air. Within these walls, Romanian engineers weren’t just replicating existing technology, they were innovating. They developed their own products, like the germanium photodiode in 1963, and filed over 105 patents. The IPRS Băneasa even published its own technical journal, “Beta”, further solidifying its role as a knowledge hub. This was more than a factory. It was a microcosm of Romanian ingenuity and ambition, a testament to a time when “Made in Romania” electronics held a place on the world stage. The story of IPRS Băneasa, however, isn’t just one of innovation. Privatization in the early 2000s marked a dark turn. A controversial sale to Omar Hayssam’s Ogharit Trading Co., followed by accusations of asset stripping and a subsequent annulment of the sale, led to the company’s decline. The halls that once buzzed with activity fell silent. Today, Fosta Platformă IPRS Băneasa stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. It’s a silent testament to a period of technological ambition, marred by a turbulent transition. As we move on, let’s carry with us the echoes of innovation that once resonated within these walls.
