Clang! The distant ring of a telephone echoes in your mind as you gaze upon the Telephones Company Building. This Art Deco masterpiece stands as a testament to Bucharest’s ambition. It was once a symbol of modernity. Known locally as Palatul Telefoanelor, this building has a captivating story.

Before this majestic structure rose, the Terasa Otetelesanu stood here. It was a vibrant terrace bar and coffee house. The city’s elite gathered here, next to the Romanian National Theatre. But progress called.

In 1929, Romania faced economic hardship due to the Great Depression. The government secured a loan from J.P. Morgan. This deal granted a 20-year telephony monopoly to ITT. ITT then established the Romanian Telephone Company, SART. Their mission was to modernize Romania’s telephone system. The Telephones Company Building became the centerpiece of this endeavor.

Designed by Edmond Van Saanen Algi, with contributions from Louis S. Weeks and Walter Froy, the building was groundbreaking. It was Bucharest’s first major modernist structure on Calea Victoriei. Some even saw its shadow as Broadway’s reflection. Its steel skeleton was produced by Reșița steelworks. Construction spanned from 1931 to 1933.

In 1934, King Carol II inaugurated the Telephones Company Building. At 52.5 meters, it was Bucharest’s tallest building until 1956. The building faced challenges. It survived earthquakes in 1940, 1977, and 1986. Allied bombing in 1944 also threatened it during World War II.

During the Communist era, the government nationalized SART. It became a division of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The 1989 Revolution led to ROM-POST-TELECOM. This became Romtelecom in 1991.

A 1993 study revealed structural issues. The roof was only designed for a coffee shop. It was never intended to support microwave antennas. Reconstruction began in 1997. Engineers had to redraw lost building plans. The project aimed to replicate the original facade. It also included structural reinforcement. The extensive project employed 700 people. It cost roughly 1 million euros. Work concluded in 2005.

The Telephones Company Building stands as an enduring icon. It represents Bucharest’s blend of history and progress. It reminds us of the city’s resilience. It also showcases architectural innovation. Take a moment to appreciate its Art Deco elegance. It once sparked controversy. Now, it stands as a point of pride for Bucharest.
