A forgotten sentinel stands before us. This is Fortul Nr 2 Mogoșoaia. One of eighteen forts encircling Bucharest. It whispers tales of a bygone era. A time when King Carol I envisioned a formidable defense. He commissioned General Henri Alexis Brialmont. This Belgian military engineer designed the impressive fortifications. The goal was to protect the capital from northern threats.

Fortul Nr 2 Mogoșoaia is a pentagonal structure. It represents a modified version of General Brialmont’s original designs. It is categorized as a ‘Big Force’ fort. Construction occurred between 1883 and 1903. This was part of a larger project costing 111 million lei. A significant sum included land expropriation costs.

Imagine the soldiers stationed here. About 100 could occupy each fort and battery. They manned cannons ready for any attack. However the forts were sadly depleted of weaponry by 1914. There were insufficient funds to maintain them. The German army entered Bucharest without a fight. They found the fortifications largely defenseless.

This fort and its counterparts were interconnected by tunnels. The network initially included 18 forts and 18 batteries. Unfortunately many were lost. Accidental explosions destroyed ammunition depots. Today 17 forts and 13 batteries remain. Many are in various states of disrepair. Some are flooded others abandoned. Some are even used for storage or as shooting ranges.

Fortul Nr 2 Mogoșoaia. It stands as a testament to Romania’s history. It’s a silent observer of times of war and peace. A symbol of a once-ambitious defensive network. Its story echoes the changing fortunes of Bucharest itself. A reminder of plans grand and ultimately unfulfilled. A glimpse into a past that is gradually fading from memory. Let us remember this quiet guardian. Let us preserve its legacy.
