Envision Fortul Nr. 11 Popești, a silent sentinel guarding Bucharest. Fortul Nr. 11 Popești stands as a testament to a bygone era. It whispers tales of military strategy and national ambition. This fort, part of Bucharest’s intricate defense system, was designed not for glory, but for deterrence.

Fortul Nr. 11 Popești is a type 3 fort. It shares a striking resemblance to its counterpart in Leurdeni. Both were designed as integral parts of Bucharest’s fortification ring. A key difference lies in Fortul Nr. 11 Popești’s lateral galleries. These galleries uniquely connect to the fort’s shoulder turrets, not the counterscarp gallery. This seemingly minor detail reflects the evolving military thinking of the late 19th century. The design was tweaked to maximize efficiency and defense against emerging weaponry.

This fort, along with 17 others and 18 intermediate batteries, formed a ring around Bucharest. This ambitious project, initiated by King Carol I, aimed to make Bucharest an impenetrable fortress. The entire system, designed by Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont, was an enormous undertaking. It cost a staggering 111.5 million lei in gold, a sum equivalent to roughly 613 million euros today.

Today, Fortul Nr. 11 Popești remains under the administration of the SPP (Protection and Guard Service). Unlike many of its counterparts which fell into disrepair, Fortul Nr. 11 Popești appears to be in relatively good condition. While access is restricted, its presence speaks volumes. It serves as a reminder of a time when Bucharest prepared for war, and of the ingenuity that went into creating this complex defense system. The fort’s story is one of ambition, strategic planning, and ultimately, a shift in military technology that rendered it obsolete before it even saw battle.
