Deep within the protective embrace of Bucharest’s outer limits, Fortul 5 – Ștefănești stands as a silent sentinel. It whispers tales of a city’s ambition and a nation’s struggle for security. Fortul 5 – Ștefănești is unique among its brethren. It was designed as a “water fort,” a strategic marvel meant to repel any advancing enemy. A permanent lake guarded its front and sides, creating a natural barrier. Access was granted only by a retractable bridge, further enhancing its defenses. Imagine the scene: a drawbridge slowly rising, cutting off access to the fort, while the still waters of the lake reflect the anxious faces of those seeking refuge within. Fortul 5 – Ștefănești was a fortress built to withstand the test of time and the ravages of war. It was designed with a trapezoidal layout, its walls rising seven meters high, a formidable obstacle to any attacker. The main front, angled sharply outwards, housed a metallic, armored caponier. This fortified structure allowed defenders to fire upon the enemy from protected positions, flanking any advance. The fort’s armament was equally impressive. It boasted a cupola armed with a powerful 150 mm gun, another cupola housing two 150 mm guns, and seven eclipse turrets bristling with 57 mm rapid-fire guns. An additional rapid-fire gun was strategically positioned for flanking fire, ensuring complete coverage of the surrounding area. Designed by the Direction for Fortifications, Fortul 5 – Ștefănești represented the pinnacle of 19th-century military engineering. Today, Fortul 5 – Ștefănești remains under the watchful eye of a military unit. This limits public access, but even from afar, the fort’s imposing structure evokes a sense of awe and respect. Though time and neglect have taken their toll, the echoes of its history still resonate within its walls. Fortul 5 – Ștefănești serves as a poignant reminder of Bucharest’s complex past.
