Have you ever imagined a rose garden blossoming within the walls of a formidable fortress? Welcome to Fort X in Cologne. Right here before you stands a testament to military might transformed into a haven of beauty. This impressive structure is one of eleven originally planned forts part of Cologne’s Prussian ring of fortifications. Built between 1819 and 1825 it was designed by the architect Ernst Ludwig von Aster.
Fort X was not merely another fort. It played a crucial role in the city’s defense. Its imposing structure housed 300 men. It even bore a prestigious name: ‘Prince Wilhelm of Prussia’. Fort X was considered especially significant. It is unique. It’s the only fort from the initial construction phase that still vividly showcases the original concept and its various elements.
After World War I the Treaty of Versailles threatened the demolition of all fortifications near the Rhine. Fort X was repurposed. It even served as housing. But Cologne’s citizens fought to save it.
In 1921 thanks to garden director Fritz Encke Fort X was reborn. It was transformed into a ‘green fort’. The centerpiece of Encke’s vision: a stunning symmetrical rose garden. This wasn’t just any garden. It was significantly influenced by Konrad Adenauer Cologne’s rose-loving mayor. Adenauer’s legacy perfumes the air today.
World War II left its mark. Two direct hits damaged the fort. Ironically its cellars and galleries became makeshift air raid shelters. Even after the war ended the fort found a use. Bombed-out families found refuge within its walls. The last resident Georg Polster passed away in 2011.
Today Fort X is more than a historical landmark. It’s a vibrant green space. The meticulously maintained rose garden boasts over 70 varieties. It offers a tranquil escape within the city’s bustling heart. The fort itself stands as a symbol of Cologne’s resilience and its ability to adapt and flourish. Explore the vast park.
