Beneath the earth lies a story. A story whispered through generations. This is the Fort Wayne Burial Mound. Right here before us stands a silent testament to a rich and complex past. For centuries this mound has held the remains of countless individuals. These were not simply bodies. They were the heart of a community.

The Fort Wayne Burial Mound is far more than just a burial site. It’s the last surviving member of the Springwells Mound Group. Imagine a time before the city. A time when this land was dotted with similar mounds. Each a sacred space. Each a repository of history. Archaeologists have painstakingly unearthed artifacts from these sites. These objects speak volumes about the people who lived here.

Henry Gillman a pioneer in archaeological techniques meticulously excavated the Fort Wayne Mound in 1876. His detailed records paint a vivid picture of the past. He documented carefully the burials and artifacts recovered. These findings included pottery vessels arrowheads stone knives and seashell beads. Many burials also held grave goods suggesting status and cultural practices.

Later in 1944 Dr. Carl Holmquist led another excavation. He unearthed 24 burials. One unique find was a dog burial. This points to the potential for ceremonial practices or even sacrifice a common ritual in many early Native American tribes. Many of the grave goods especially the pottery were associated with female burials. This hints at significant roles women held within their society. The artifacts recovered were not just grave goods. They were a glimpse into daily life. Chipped and ground stone tools bone needles shell beads and even clay marbles were discovered.

The pottery is particularly fascinating. Two distinct styles were found. Wayne Ware a utilitarian pottery type. Also Riviere ware a more elaborate and decorative style. Both styles contained food remains. Evidence of their use as cooking pots. The presence of Early Woodland Marion thick ware hints at an even earlier presence. A possible occupation before the later cultures.

Radiocarbon dating places the Wayne Tradition burials around AD 750. While the Western Basin occupation occurred around AD 1159. This means the mound predates European arrival by nearly 400 years. This site witnessed generations come and go long before any written history.
