Can you hear the echoes of a bygone military era? Fort Tilden Historic District stands as a sentinel on the coast of Queens. It is a place where history whispers through the dunes.
Fort Tilden is a former United States Army installation. Now it forms part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. The National Park Service administers it. Fort Tilden Historic District sits on the Rockaway Peninsula. Jacob Riis Park is to the east. Breezy Point Tip lies to the west. The National Park Service operates all three sites.
Imagine this: It is the early 20th century. The nation braces for war. Fort Tilden emerges as a critical coastal defense. Established shortly after the U.S. entered World War I in 1917 it was first named Camp Rockaway Beach. The fort is named after Samuel J. Tilden. He was a one-term Governor of New York State.
Initially, the fort housed a battery with four 12-inch coast defense mortars. Soon, two batteries of 6-inch guns joined them. Concerns arose about mortar fire damaging Naval Air Station Rockaway. Railway mortars replaced the fixed mounts. These could be moved away from the air station before firing.
Fast forward to the inter-war period. New York City becomes one of the first locations defended by 16-inch M1919 guns. Battery Harris began construction in March 1921. It became operational in December 1924. The battery’s two guns were originally mounted in the open.
World War II brought massive changes. A concrete casemate enclosed the guns at Battery Harris between 1941 and 1942. This bunker protected against air attacks. It also housed ammunition magazines and the fire control system. Fort Tilden was supplemented by another 16-inch gun battery in New Jersey. The older heavy guns were removed and scrapped.
After the war, gun defenses became obsolete. Fort Tilden was disarmed in 1948. All guns were removed for scrap.
The Cold War ushered in a new mission. In 1950, Fort Tilden became Site NY-43. Sixteen 90 mm guns were deployed for air defense. Later, Nike-Ajax missiles replaced the guns in 1955. These were converted to nuclear-capable Nike-Hercules missiles in 1958. The Nike-Hercules system was deactivated in 1972.
From the late 1960s, Fort Tilden served as an Army Reserve post. It housed various units including a Signal Corps unit and an Engineer Brigade.
In the late 1970s, Fort Tilden was decommissioned. It was turned over to the National Park Service. It became part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.
Today, Fort Tilden is a unique blend of history and nature. Most old military installations are abandoned. Structures are covered in graffiti. Some buildings have been renovated for arts groups. Large open areas serve as sports grounds. Battery Harris East has a viewing platform. It offers 360-degree views of the city, harbor, and ocean.
The wilder parts of Fort Tilden attract bird-watchers and nature lovers. The beaches are popular for fishing. Fort Tilden is also an important nesting area for the threatened Piping Plover.
Now, as you explore Fort Tilden Historic District, remember its layers of history. From coastal artillery to missile defense, it has played many roles. Today, it stands as a testament to the past. It offers recreation and natural beauty for all.
