Can you picture the mighty guns of Fort Strong overlooking Boston Harbor? Fort Strong a name whispered on the wind for over a century stands as a silent sentinel. Built in 1893 it played a crucial role in defending the harbor from invaders. From its inception to its eventual decommissioning it stood guard.

Initially known as Long Island Military Reservation Fort Strong was renamed in 1899. It honors Brigadier General George Crockett Strong. The fort was part of the Endicott period of coastal defense expansion. It boasted impressive weaponry. Ten-inch guns dominated the landscape. These guns had a range of almost eight miles. Smaller three-inch rapid fire guns protected the mine fields.

Fort Strong’s location was strategically perfect. It protected both the northern and southern approaches to the harbor. The large barracks housed over 450 soldiers. The soldiers lived in barracks and surrounding houses near the parade ground. The fort even had electric ammunition hoists. A marvel of engineering for its time.

World War I brought change. The fort’s armament was reorganized. Some guns were moved. Others were scrapped. World War II saw the decommissioning of many big guns. However Fort Strong still played a role. It protected minefields in the harbor.

After World War II the fort housed an Army Intelligence Service post. A little-known fact is that Wernher von Braun and other German scientists were secretly housed there. This was in the late 1940s. Fort Strong later became a Nike missile site. It remained active until 1961. Then it was declared surplus property.

Today Fort Strong lies largely in ruins. Its concrete structures stand as a testament to its past. Its imposing presence evokes a sense of history. Its story unfolds in the rusting metal and overgrown vegetation. It serves as a reminder of Boston’s rich military past. A reminder of the dedication of those who served there. Fort Strong remains a powerful symbol of America’s unwavering defense.
