Has anyone ever told you the story of the cunning supplier and Fort Al-Mirani? Fort Al-Mirani stands proudly overlooking the Sea of Oman. This impressive 16th-century fort played a crucial role in Oman’s history. Fort Al-Mirani existed even before the Portuguese arrived. They rebuilt it in 1587. It was the first fort in Oman equipped with cannons. Legend says a Portuguese commander fell in love with the daughter of a Hindu supplier. The supplier refused the marriage proposal due to religious differences. The commander threatened to ruin him. The supplier cunningly agreed to the marriage. He spent a year seemingly preparing. He convinced the commander that Fort Al-Mirani needed its supplies replenished. Secretly, he slowly removed all the gunpowder and grain. He rendered the fort defenseless. The Omani imam, Sultan Bin Saif, seized this opportunity. He retook Fort Al-Mirani in 1649. This victory led to the expulsion of the Portuguese from Muscat. The wedding never happened. But Fort Al-Mirani played a pivotal role in Oman’s liberation. Fort Al-Mirani is now open to the public. It offers stunning views of Muscat, the Al Alam Palace, and the old port. It stands as a testament to Omani resilience and a symbol of their rich history.
