“Did they really cook rocks in here?” a child’s voice once echoed through the Forn de Calç. This ancient lime kiln whispers tales of Ibiza’s past. Forn de Calç is more than just a stone structure. It’s a portal to a time when islanders transformed simple limestone into a vital resource. The chemical magic happened around 900°C, although for a faster reaction, temperatures often reached 1000°C inside the Forn de Calç. Too much heat, however, and the lime would be “burnt,” becoming less reactive. This process, heating limestone to produce quicklime (calcium oxide), dates back 14,000 years in Asia Minor. The principle has remained the same, from these ancient origins to the industrial lime kilns of today. The Forn de Calç likely falls into the category of “permanent” kilns, built for long-term use near abundant limestone sources, unlike the temporary “ephemeral” kilns built closer to the forests for fuel. The Forn de Calç would have been strategically placed. This location provided easy access to both limestone and the wood necessary for the firing process. Picture this: the kiln brimming with carefully arranged layers of limestone, larger stones at the bottom and smaller ones filling the gaps at the top. The “gavell,” a large forked tool, would be used to feed wood into the opening at the bottom, stoking the intense heat needed for the transformation. Once lit, the kiln would burn continuously for 10 to 15 days, under the watchful eye of the master lime burner. The work was arduous, involving quarrying the stone, transporting it to the kiln, and maintaining the fire. The air would be thick with smoke and the intense heat of the kiln, a testament to the hard labor involved in this essential craft. The resulting quicklime, brilliantly white and with the gaps between the stones vanished, was a precious commodity. It became the binder for construction, mixed with water, clay, or sand for plaster and whitewash. It served to waterproof cisterns and even had agricultural uses as a pesticide. Today, the Forn de Calç stands as a silent witness to this once-thriving industry. Overgrown with vegetation, it echoes the tireless work of the “calciners,” the skilled lime burners who shaped Ibiza’s built environment. It serves as a tangible link to the island’s rich history, its vital importance stretching from construction to agriculture, reflecting the ingenuity and resilience of Ibiza’s past inhabitants.
