Over five million bricks. That’s how many it took to build the mighty Meadowside Granary. Right here on this very spot stood a colossal structure the largest brick building in Europe. For almost a century it dominated the Glasgow skyline. Its thirteen storeys pierced the sky a testament to engineering prowess.

The Meadowside Granary wasn’t just a building. It was a vital part of Glasgow’s history. Built in stages between 1911 and 1967 it served as the most important grain store in the UK during World War I. Imagine the hustle and bustle the constant flow of grain from ships to storage. The air thick with the scent of grain the rhythmic clatter of machinery.

Each extension added to its grandeur. The 1960 extension cost a staggering £3 million doubling its storage capacity. Then in 1967 a final expansion increased its capacity further. High-level gantries connected the buildings. Glasgow kids imagined them as giant slides a testament to childhood imagination. The sheer scale of the structure was awe-inspiring.

Construction wasn’t without incident. A severe storm in 1912 damaged the site. Winds blew down four cranes causing delays and setbacks. It opened on 7 May 1914. The finished complex held over 600000 tons of grain. The granary itself was a symbol of Glasgow’s industrial might. A tribute to the city’s role as a major port.

However times changed. The port declined. Shipping became less important. In 1988 Meadowside Granary closed its doors. Demolition followed in 2002. The 140000 tonnes of debris were ground into sand for new construction. Today residential apartments stand where once stood a giant of industry. The memory of Meadowside Granary lives on in the stories of those who witnessed its grandeur. A reminder of a bygone era. A testament to Glasgow’s rich history.
