Behold the Former Customs House. It stands as a testament to Nuremberg’s rich history. Today, we’ll delve into its story.

Initially constructed around 1498, the Former Customs House began its life as a granary. City architect Hans Beheim designed it. Back then, the city wall ran along this very spot. The granary was erected in the former moat. It was Nuremberg’s largest grain storage facility. Measuring 84 x 20 x 29 meters, it dwarfed the other eleven civic storehouses. These storehouses were vital. They ensured a steady food supply during crises.

The Former Customs House is a three-story sandstone building. It boasts a distinctive five-story dormer bay in its gabled roof. Carts once entered through narrow ends. Rooftop hoists aided in the storage of goods. Look closely at the eastern gable. Notice the blind ogee arches. The lancet-arched portal displays the city’s coat of arms. Adam Kraft created this in 1502.

Its role evolved over time. After 1572, the granary became a weigh house and customhouse. “Maut” is German for toll. Hence the name Mauthalle. By 1897/98, commercial use took over.

The Former Customs House suffered heavy damage during World War II. Restoration work occurred in 1953. The half-timbered dormer was reconstructed in plastered masonry. However, the original half-timbered facade can still be seen on the building’s eastern wing. The rest was rebuilt using brick.

Venture inside the Former Customs House. Discover its impressive cellar. Twenty-six pillars support the structure above. Today, the cellar houses a restaurant and the Barefoot brewery.

The Former Customs House has witnessed centuries of Nuremberg’s transformations. From a crucial granary to a bustling customhouse. It stands as a reminder of the city’s resilience. Take a moment to appreciate its architecture. Admire its blend of medieval and restored elements. It is a unique blend that tells a compelling story. The Former Customs House embodies Nuremberg’s enduring spirit.
