A legacy of magnificent endurance. That’s Fordson High School. Right before you stands a majestic building. It’s a testament to ambition and history. Fordson High School opened in 1922. It was established in a community then known as East Dearborn. Henry Ford himself funded much of its 2.5 million dollar construction cost. The school’s name reflects the Fordson tractors. The Ford Motor Company mass produced these tractors at the time.
Fordson’s imposing Collegiate Gothic architecture is striking. It’s inspired by the University of Michigan Law School and buildings in England. The tower is a prominent feature. During World War II it served as an aircraft spotter post. It protected the nearby Ford Rouge Plant. The plant manufactured tanks for the Allied forces.
Fordson High School boasts an impressive list of alumni. These include world champion boxer Charles McCoy. Robert Saleh current head coach of the New York Jets is also an alumnus. He’s only the fourth Arab American head coach in NFL history. He is also the first Muslim head coach in the league. Other notable alumni include Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert Griffin and former Ambassador to Germany John C. Kornblum. Kornblum played a key role in Ronald Reagan’s famous Berlin speech.
However Fordson’s history isn’t without its complexities. Former Dearborn Mayor Orville Hubbard graduated from Fordson. He was a controversial figure known for his segregationist policies. Eddie Slovik another graduate met a tragic end. He was the last American soldier executed for desertion since the Civil War. His story highlights the difficult experiences of some during World War II.
Fordson’s student body has changed significantly over time. Initially mostly European American it now reflects the diverse demographics of Dearborn. It’s home to a large Arab American population. The school has adapted to accommodate the needs of its diverse student body. This includes establishing a prayer room. It’s also adapted by offering halal food in the cafeteria. The school has even adjusted football practice schedules during Ramadan.
The school has undergone several renovations and additions. The 2005 addition seamlessly integrated modern facilities while preserving its historic character. This earned Fordson the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. The athletic facilities were also extensively renovated in 2007.
Fordson High School is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to the history of Dearborn and the United States. It’s a place where generations of students have learned and grown. It’s also a place where American history continues to unfold.
