The story begins in 1858. A small Methodist society formed. They held services in each other’s homes. Soon they acquired land on Marion Avenue. This is where they built their first church a modest wooden building.

By 1892 the area’s population boomed. The congregation needed a larger space. A new one-story brick church was built. It featured a square crenellated bell tower. Sadly the original brick structure had a fiery end. A devastating fire in 1938 damaged the library and offices. Many invaluable church records were lost. The fire was a setback. Yet it didn’t extinguish the spirit of the church.
The current building. This stunning structure rose from the ashes. Or rather the demolition of the previous building. It was constructed in 1969. The building reflects Fordham United Methodist Church’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The materials and furnishings were donated by members of the diverse community. A Catholic neighbor donated the pulpit. A Jewish friend donated pews and a front panel. This underscores the church’s open-armed welcome.
The church’s dedication to its community extends beyond its physical structure. As early as 1976 Spanish-speaking services were added. This ensured that all members felt included and understood. The church actively embraced the growing Hispanic population in the Bronx.
