Beneath the Rua de Pelames lies a secret. Here stands the Fonte de Mouzinho da Silveira. This isn’t just a fountain it’s a testament to Porto’s ingenuity.

Let’s delve into the story of this monumental fountain. It was born from necessity and vision in the late 19th century. The city planned the Rua de Mouzinho da Silveira in 1872. But there was a problem. The Rua de Pelames stood in the way. Cutting it off was not an option.

The solution was ingenious. An arch was built to support the Rua de Pelames. Then the space beneath was used to construct this fountain. Thus the Fonte de Mouzinho da Silveira was created.

Look closely at the fountain’s design. Notice the three levels adorned with detailed stonework. The central niche commands attention. It features a shell with a spout. Water once flowed from here. The rectangular tank below catches the water. The fountain is made of granite and iron. These materials add to its imposing presence.

Initially, the fountain had two water sources. One came from the springs of Paranhos and Salgueiros. The other originated from a source on Rua do Almada. The fountain was also supplied by the waters of the Arca do Mercado do Anjo. This water then flowed to the Fonte da Praça da Ribeira.

Interestingly, the Fonte de Mouzinho da Silveira replaced another fountain. The Fonte do Souto or de São Roque once stood in São Roque Square. It was removed when the Rua de Mouzinho da Silveira was built.

For a time two shops were built into the arch. This happened between 1924 and 1925. In 1966, the city removed these shops. The original fountain was then reconstructed.

Today the Fonte de Mouzinho da Silveira stands as a relic. It is a reminder of Porto’s history. It is a part of the city’s historical center. The fountain is a public treasure. It showcases hydraulic engineering of the 19th century. Take a moment to appreciate this blend of art and engineering. The Fonte de Mouzinho da Silveira is more than just a fountain. It is a symbol of Porto’s past.
