Can you imagine taking a refreshing sip from a fountain that was once considered medicinal? This is exactly what you can do at the Fonte das Águas Ferreas. It’s a grand old testament to the city’s past, a testament to a time when people believed the water held healing properties. The Fonte das Águas Ferreas was originally built close to the Rua das Águas Ferreas, just a short distance from Rua da Boavista in the heart of Porto. The fountain itself has since been relocated to the Parque da Cidade. Built with granite, this stunning fountain has two spouts that used to gush forth with iron-rich water. In the 19th century, the fountain grew in popularity and became a local gathering place for young ladies in Porto. It was so popular that the fountain even had a guard named “Cartola” due to his trademark hat, who would often give people a drink from a shared cup for a small fee. The fountain stood for many years and was once surrounded by lush green fields, but unfortunately, the fountain became neglected and was even buried under a thick blanket of weeds. After being carefully dismantled, the Fonte das Águas Ferreas was reconstructed in the Parque da Cidade. Today, this fountain is truly a reminder of Porto’s unique history, a place where you can still get a glimpse of the city’s old charm.
