Fonte Arcada, nestled in the heart of Penafiel, Portugal, holds secrets whispered through centuries. This quaint village, with its population just tipping over a thousand souls, wasn’t always so tranquil. Imagine, if you will, knights in shining armor, the clatter of hooves against cobblestone, the glint of swords in the Portuguese sun. Before Portugal even existed as we know it, Fonte Arcada was given as a gift. The generous donor? None other than Dona Teresa, mother of the very first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. The lucky recipients? The Knights Templar, a famed and powerful order of warrior monks. Even then, Fonte Arcada was no stranger to power. The Knights established a stronghold here, their presence marked by a contract between the Order and the Bishop of Porto. This agreement, etched in time, detailed the offerings owed to the Bishop upon his visits to the Church of São Tiago de Font Arcada. After the fall of the Templars in 1312, Fonte Arcada shifted allegiance, becoming a commandery under the Order of Christ.
