The Fontaine du Collège Calvin stands proudly in front of the oldest public secondary school in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a symbol of the city’s rich academic history, a reminder of the legacy of John Calvin, a theological reformer in the 16th century. It wasn’t always a fountain. It wasn’t always a symbol of wisdom either.

This majestic fountain was created in 1959, as a gift to the Collège Calvin for its 400th anniversary. The Association des anciens collégiens, which is composed of alumni of the institution, presented it to the school. The fountain, a bronze sculpture, is capped by an owl, symbolizing wisdom as it is a central icon to the College. The owl is the work of Swiss artist Willy Vuilleumier (1898-1983) who was known for his sculptures and statue work. His skill and meticulous approach to the owl are evident in the detail, highlighting the owl’s grace and intelligence, which are both qualities associated with scholarship.

The Fontaine du Collège Calvin is a testament to the historical significance of the school and the lasting impact of its founder, John Calvin. In the midst of this bustling city, it stands as a tribute to the pursuit of knowledge and a reminder of the wisdom that has been passed down through generations.
