Gazing upon the Fontaine de la Place Plantamour, one might initially see just a charming fountain. But beneath its elegant exterior lies a captivating tale. The Fontaine de la Place Plantamour graces its namesake square with a unique history. Originally, this fountain resided in the courtyard of a children’s school on Rue du Môle. It wasn’t designed for Place Plantamour at all. The fountain, with its two jets, oval white rock basin, and central column topped with a whimsical Ionic capital, was likely created by architect Charles Gampert in 1877. It was moved to its current home between the two World Wars, following the removal of a section of Rue Jean-Jaquet. The relocation created a “small square,” perfect for the elegant Fontaine de la Place Plantamour. The fountain’s journey reflects Geneva’s evolving urban landscape. Its original purpose served the children of the school. Now, the Fontaine de la Place Plantamour provides a tranquil focal point for the public, a testament to its enduring charm and adaptability.
