In 1886, a grand vision took root right here in Folsom, Pennsylvania. Land was being sold, dreams were being built, all thanks to the Folsom Land Company. This ambitious enterprise, led by Thomas T. Tasker and William Henry Sutton, aimed to transform this patch of Delaware County into a thriving community. Folsom itself, did you know, is named after Frances Folsom, the wife of President Grover Cleveland. Imagine the whispers and excitement that must have rippled through the fledgling town. The Folsom Land Company, however, met its demise in 1894. But the spirit of Folsom persevered, fueled by the residents who had put down roots here. From these early days, Folsom’s story is intertwined with the story of the Wawa convenience store chain. The very first Wawa opened its doors in Folsom on April 16, 1964, at the intersection of MacDade Boulevard and Swarthmore Avenue. This unassuming beginning marked the start of a Pennsylvania institution. That original store closed in 2016, replaced by a “super Wawa” down the street, but its legacy remains a key part of Folsom’s identity. Today, Folsom is a bustling census-designated place within Ridley Township, a community of over 8,000 people. It’s home to Ridley High School and Edgewood Elementary School, part of the Ridley School District. It’s a place where history and modern life intersect, a testament to the enduring vision of those who first imagined a community called Folsom.
