Created in 1964, the Fohlen Sculpture by Martin Irwahn stands before us. It’s a captivating piece. The bronze foal isn’t just standing idly. It’s contorted, its head reaching back towards its hindquarters, almost as if it’s trying to nibble an itch it can’t quite reach. The Fohlen Sculpture was commissioned as part of the “Kunst am Bau” program. This program aimed to integrate art into public spaces, particularly in new housing developments. The SAGA, a housing company, purchased the sculpture. They were responsible for developing the residential area where the Fohlen Sculpture now resides. The sculpture remains in SAGA’s ownership to this day. It’s a playful pose, full of youthful energy, frozen in time by Irwahn’s skilled hands. Interestingly, this isn’t the only foal sculpture Irwahn created in Hamburg. A similar piece exists in Lohbrügge, though in that one, the foal is reaching for its shoulder. The Fohlen Sculpture in Jenfeld, however, has a unique charm. Its placement within the green space north of the Schöneberger Straße apartments adds to its tranquil appeal. It’s a quiet observer of daily life, a touch of artistic whimsy in the heart of a residential area.
