“A cross in the city? That’s unusual,” you might think. This, my friends, is the Foerg Kreuz Cross. And it has a story intertwined with the growth of Augsburg. You see, this cross once stood as a lonely sentinel in the fields west of the railway line between Augsburg and Buchloe. It marked the former farmstead of the Foerg family. But as Augsburg expanded, the city crept closer and closer. In 1985, the Kolping Family of Goeggingen, a Catholic social action group, recognized the cross’s plight and took action. They completely renovated the Foerg Kreuz Cross, even gilding the corpus. It was then moved to its current location, safeguarding it from the encroaching urban sprawl. Yet, the Foerg Kreuz Cross isn’t alone in its journey. It stands as a reminder of the four crosses that once dotted the Goeggingen highlands. Every June, the Kolping Family organizes a pilgrimage to these crosses, their prayers echoing the changing times.
